As well as being taught to play music, sing, embroider, paint and draw, they learned several languages and the art of poetry. It was through her father that Anna Roemers joined a network of great Dutch writers and scholars that included Constantijn Huygens and Hugo de Groot. She was a pioneer in the engraving of texts and naturalistic depictions of plants and animals on roemers and berkemeyers, two types of drinking glass made of green forest glass. They were very popular in the Netherlands and their shape and colour make them ideal for the application of diamond-point engravings, whereby an image or a text is engraved in the glass with a diamond-tipped pen. Calligraphy on glass is regarded as the pinnacle of Dutch diamond-point engraving.
