This new art was named, fittingly, Art Nouveau. It drew inspiration from the natural forms of flowers, leaves, animals and insects, and was characterised by fluid lines, geometrical forms and asymmetrical compositions. From Paris, Brussels and Munich, Art Nouveau spread throughout Western Europe and the United States. The influence of this international movement was present in all art forms from around 1890 to the start of the First World War in 1914.
