This made her the director of the first pottery factory in the city of Purmerend. From 1895 to 1904 the company produced a style of ornamental and utilitarian earthenware that has its place in a notable development in the late 19th century: the Art Nouveau style, which was popular abroad, had a great influence on the many pottery factories set up in the Netherlands in this period. Clementine van Rijn’s company employed several artists who went on to became major names in their field. They include Chris Lanooy, who experimented with metallic glazes, and sculptor Willem Brouwer.
