Christina Chalon

A strikingly large amount of her early work has survived, including drawings she made at the age of just four. This creative young girl was destined to become a popular artist. Like many other artists of her time, she drew inspiration from popular subjects in the arts of the previous century, particularly the work of Adriaen van Ostade. She focused on rustic and other scenes from everyday life, depicting farmers, mothers with children, and domestic and street settings. In 1779, 32 of her drawings were published and used in one of the first Dutch books for children. Chalon’s work attracted great admiration at home and abroad, both during her lifetime and far into the following century.
