Elisabeth Johanna Koning

Koning’s right forearm was not fully developed, but she managed perfectly well using only her left hand. She had great success with her floral still lifes and botanical drawings. She regularly exhibited her work, and exclusive clients – including King William II of the Netherlands – were queueing up to buy her work. In 1859, Koning married a ship’s captain, and their honeymoon took them to the Indonesian archipelago, a colony of the Netherlands at the time. Inspired by the local flora and fauna, Koning painted bright watercolours that were rich in accurate botanical detail. A valuable contribution to both art and science, her work earned her membership of the Dutch East Indies Society for Natural Science (NNV).
