Many young readers identified with the main character, and it became one of the Netherlands’ most important post-war novels. Reve was a prolific writer, but he was also influential beyond the literary sphere. His openness about his sexuality contributed to the emancipation of homosexuality in the 1960s. He became a well-known public figure, making frequent appearances in the media. Reve’s provocative nature meant controversy and criticism were never far away: he wrote shocking sex scenes, made bold statements and passed racist comments. When Reve died in 2006, his legacy was a large body of work and an enduring impact on Dutch culture.
