Godert Alexander Gerard Philip Capellen

Van der Capellen was tasked with ensuring the colony became a profitable region for the Dutch treasury again. He also fostered the arts and sciences, and founded the botanical garden ‘s Lands Plantentuin Buitenzorg (now Kebun Raya Bogor). Opposition among the population grew over the course of Van der Capellen’s career. People were rising up against colonial rule throughout the Indonesian Archipelago – from West-Sumatra and Palembang to the Moluccas and Boni. In 1826, Van der Capellen resigned his position and returned to the Netherlands.
