Hercules Segers

He learned to paint in Amsterdam under the Flemish landscape artist Gillis van Coninxloo, who is known for his woodland landscapes. Segers followed tradition to the extent that he painted and etched landscapes, but he gave them a uniquely personal twist by using his imagination to invent mountainous and mysterious scenes. The artist also painted prints, printed on canvas and experimented with a variety of other printing techniques. As a result, no two prints by Segers are identical. Segers’ work was highly regarded by artists and art lovers alike. Rembrandt, who was a great admirer of the artist, owned eight of his paintings. While 184 prints by Segers have survived, there are just 16 extant paintings by Segers.
