Kaat Mossel

Once they were checked, she would distribute them and regulate their trade. This work earned her the nickname Cate Mussel (Kaat Mossel). But Mulder was not only a mussel inspector. She was also a famous Orangist, a fanatic supporter of the Orange-Nassau family that ruled the Netherlands as stadtholders. When riots broke out in Rotterdam in 1784, Mulder was identified as one of the instigators. She was accused of inciting the rioters against the republican Patriots. Mulder was arrested and locked up in the dungeons of the town hall. After her release in 1787, Mulder became a symbol for Orangeism.
