Kooi also often makes collages that incorporate daily objects such as photographs and cotton buds. She makes her sumptuous and decorative drawings with great attention to detail. Kooi explores her own sense of shame and discomfort about subjects such as body fat and menstruation, and questions prevailing norms. What is left unseen or overlooked? Her work is an ode to precisely these things. Kooi counters clichés to break the predominance of imagery created by mostly (white) men.
