She soon made a name for herself in the art world with her characteristic and intriguing collages, which incorporated photographs, texts and drawings. Dumas uses her work to explore themes such as sexuality, heritage and violence, and to expose the way in which experiences relating to these themes are shaped by assumptions and preconceptions. During the 1980s she increasingly focused on portraits of the people around her. In 1995 Dumas represented the Netherlands at the Venice Biennale, alongside artists Maria Roosen and Marijke van Warmerdam.
