Roel van Duijn

He fiercely opposed the Vietnam War, the atom bomb and the state, and he was also was a pioneering climate activist. In 1965, Van Duijn started the Provo movement in Amsterdam. From there it attracted like-minded young people around the country. The Provos took absurdist, non-violent action to oppose the established order. They became a major topic for discussion around the Netherlands and abroad. Following the disbandment of the Provos, in 1970 Roel van Duijn co-founded the Kabouterpartij (‘Gnome Party’) and entered local city politics. He remained politically active in various roles and political parties until 2008.
