Their aim was to make ‘art for art’s sake’ and present reality through the eyes of the artist. Painters such as George Hendrik Breitner, Isaac Israels, Jan Veth and Willem Witsen embraced the loose brushwork of The Hague School painters, and shared their fascination with capturing light on canvas. While the older generation continued painting mostly rural views, the Amsterdam Impressionists focused on urban and more worldly scenes.
