Overview Funds and Foundations

A complete overview, in alphabetical order of all funds and foundations that support the Rijksmuseum.

Adessium Foundation
Provided funding for the educational family guide for the 17th century (2013).

American Express Foundation
The American Express Foundation contributed to the appointment of the team of Imaging Scientists for Operation Night Watch (2019). Thanks to this support, the Rijksmuseum was able to use advanced imaging technology to conduct an in-depth analysis of the condition and structure of Rembrandt’s masterpiece. The foundation also contributed to the restoration of the Breda Wall in the former Philips Wing, now known as the KPN Wing.

Ammodo
Ammodo has supported major exhibitions featuring leading international loans since 2019. In 2026, this support will be dedicated to the exhibition Willem de Kooning at Work . Previous exhibitions supported through this partnership include Frans Hals (2024), Vermeer (2023), Forget Me Not (2021), Caravaggio–Bernini (2020), Rembrandt–Velázquez (2019), Hercules Segers (2016), and Late Rembrandt (2015).

Thanks to Ammodo's support, another major monographic exhibition featuring leading international loans will be presented in the coming years.

Arbeitskreis Provenienzforschung
In 2024, the Arbeitskreis Provenienzforschung contributed to the symposium held in conjunction with the exhibition Looted , as part of the collaborative project with the Jewish Cultural Quarter.

Art Mentor Foundation
The Art Mentor Foundation Lucerne is supporting the exhibition Willem de Kooning at Work (2026). Previously, the foundation made possible the exhibitions Ellsworth Kelly (2021), Louise Bourgeois (2019), and Eduardo Chillida (2018) in the Rijksmuseum Gardens.

Bagri Foundation
The Bagri Foundation supported the exhibition Asian Bronze: 4,000 Years of Beauty (2024). The exhibition brought together more than 75 outstanding bronze works, ranging from prehistoric objects to contemporary art, from India, China, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan, Nepal, and Korea.

Bartiméus Fonds
The Bartiméus Fonds is committed to improving accessibility for people with visual impairments. In 2024, the fund made possible a three-year appointment focused on the representation of people with disabilities in the collection. It has also supported earlier initiatives, including a tactile audio model, digital accessibility tools, and indoor navigation systems.

In 2022, the Bartiméus Fonds contributed to the development of the MBE digital accessibility tools and the eZwayZ app, both designed to enhance the museum experience for blind and partially sighted visitors. In addition, the fund supported the Meye Indoor Way pilot (2021), an innovative indoor navigation system for people with visual impairments.

Bank of America
The Bank of America Foundation is supporting Operation Night Watch from 2025 through 2030. Previously, Bank of America Merrill Lynch contributed in 2011 to the research, conservation treatment, and publication of the Simplicia Cabinet , an 18th-century Amsterdam collector’s cabinet incorporating a miniature apothecary.

Beau Lieu et Beaux Arts Stichting
Provided funding for the acquisition of an album of drawings by Van Vianen and Lutma (2017).

Bei Shan Tang Foundation
Facilitates the international J.S. Lee Memorial Fellowship, which focuses on Chinese art history and archeology, curatorship, museum management and museum education. Dr. Ying-chen Peng was the J.S. Lee Memorial Fellow in 2019.

Blockbusterfonds
The Blockbusterfonds supports major exhibitions, including Willem de Kooning (2026), Metamorphoses (2026), and Vermeer (2023). Earlier exhibitions supported by the fund include Slavery (2021), All the Rembrandts (2019), High Society (2018), and Late Rembrandt (2015).

Brentano’s Steun des Ouderdoms
Brentano’s Steun des Ouderdoms is contributing to the Letters Project in 2026 and 2027.

The Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands
The Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in New York contributed to the exhibition and symposium Slavery (2023) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Cornelis Kruseman - J.M.C. Ising Stichting
Provided funding for the restoration of Piety, the painting by Cornelis Kruseman (2011).

Cultuurfonds
The Cultuurfonds has supported the Rijksmuseum for many years through its named funds in the fields of research, publications, acquisitions, and exhibitions. Recently, the fund supported the creation of glass replicas for the 17th-century dollhouses (2026). It also contributed to the acquisition of the glass vase Larmes des Soudes by Émile Gallé (2024) and The Bacchant by Adriaen de Vries (2014).

Between 2020 and 2026, the fund made possible the appointment of the curator of glass. Recent publications produced with the support of the Cultuurfonds include Artus Quellinus. Sculptor of Amsterdam (2025) and Mirror of Reality (2019). In 2012, the fund contributed to the design and installation of the Rijksmuseum Auditorium.

Stichting Daendels
Provided funding for the restoration of the portrait of Leonard van der Voort by Johan Bernard Scheffer (2011).

De Frans Mortelmans Stichting
Provided funding for the publication Mirror of Reality (2019) by curator Jenny Reynaerts.

De Gijselaar-Hintzenfonds
The De Gijselaar-Hintzen Fund contributed in 2020 to the publication Rijksboeken , a comprehensive overview of the role of books in art museums, past, present, and future. The fund also supported the publication of Mirror of Reality , by Jenny Reynaerts, on nineteenth-century Dutch painting (2019).

Stichting Democratie en Media
Stichting Democratie en Media contributed to the public programme accompanying the exhibition Slavery in 2021.

Stichting Dioraphte
In 2023, Stichting Dioraphte supported the research project An Atlas of Fingerprints on Works of Art . In addition, between 2017 and 2019, Stichting Dioraphte made possible the appointment of a junior conservator at the Netherlands Institute for Conservation, Art and Science (NICAS).

Stichting Dr. Hendrik Muller’s Vaderlandsch Fonds
In 2020, Stichting Dr. Hendrik Muller’s Vaderlandsch Fonds made possible the acquisition of an 18th-century Chinese-made punch bowl bearing a Dutch coat of arms. Previously, the fund contributed to the publication Mirror of Reality (2019), the multimedia tour accompanying the exhibition Good Hope. South Africa and the Netherlands from 1600 (2017), and the acquisition of the family portrait of the Cock Blomhoff family by Ishizaki Yushi (2008). The fund has also made various conservation treatments possible.

DutchCulture
In 2021, DutchCulture supported making the exhibition Slavery digitally accessible, as well as its accompanying public programme. Between 2014 and 2018, DutchCulture contributed to the translation of six publications from the Rijksmuseum’s Countries Series : Indonesia , Japan , Sri Lanka , Suriname , South Africa , and India . This series offered a historical perspective on the relationships between the Netherlands and these countries.

Dutch Porcelain Foundation
The Dutch Porcelain Foundation has contributed to various acquisitions, including the acquisition of an exceptional group of Loosdrecht biscuit porcelain figures (2017). In 2013, the fund made possible the acquisition of the Loosdrecht porcelain portrait busts of Maarten Tromp and Michiel de Ruyter.

Stichting Elise Mathilde Fonds
Provided funding for the restoration of Woman at a Mirror by Gerard ter Borch (2013).

Ellsworth Kelly Foundation
The Ellsworth Kelly Foundation contributed to the exhibition Ellsworth Kelly in the Rijksmuseum Gardens in 2021.

European Commission
The European Commission contributed in 2023 to Looted , a collaborative project with the Jewish Cultural Quarter.

F.G. Waller-Fonds
Since 1938, the F.G. Waller Fund has made acquisitions for the Rijksprentenkabinet (National Print Room) possible. Thanks to the fund’s annual support, more than 55,000 prints and drawings have been added to the collection to date. In addition, the fund contributed to the acquisition of a two-hundred-year-old condom (2025). The exhibition Thanks to Waller 2010–2020 presented a selection of the most remarkable acquisitions of the past decade (2020).

Fonds Sluyterman van Loo
Fonds Sluyterman van Loo is contributing to the Letters Project in 2026 and 2027. Previously, the fund supported the same project (2021), as well as the Operation Night Watch on Tour project.

Fonds 21
Fonds 21 has been an important partner of the Rijksmuseum’s educational programme for many years. Between 2023 and 2025, the fund supported the transition of the Teekenschool, building on its earlier involvement in its establishment. Thanks to this support, the Rijksmuseum’s educational programme can continue to innovate and deepen its impact. In addition, the fund made possible four two-year appointments of junior educators (2022–2025).

Previously, Fonds 21 supported the vocational education programme (2019–2021), with a particular focus on inclusivity and participation. Since 2023, Fonds 21 has provided multiple project grants for activities aimed at young adults and vocational education students. Examples include the exhibition Point of View (2024), in which vocational education students reflected on the theme of gender expression through their own photographic work, and the MBO Knowledge Days (2026–2027), part of the programme Arts Education for Vocational Education Students . In addition, Fonds 21 contributed to the exhibition Ed van der Elsken – Crazy World (2020).

Stichting Frederik Muller Fonds
Stichting Frederik Muller Fonds supported the publication of Frogs and Cheeseheads: The Netherlands and the Dutch in Foreign Political Cartoons in 2021.

Stichting Gerard Leuu Fonds
Stichting Gerard Leuu Fonds made possible the acquisition of a seventeenth-century Bible bound in cut-out silver over dark velvet in 2025.

Getty Foundation
Through the Getty Paper Project, the Getty Foundation contributed to the international workshop The Many Lives of Drawings in 2024. Previously, through the Paper Project, the Foundation supported the digitisation and cataloguing of the Rijksmuseum’s 17th-century drawings collection (2018–2021), as well as the creation of the collection catalogue of 17th-century paintings (2006).

Gieskes-Strijbis Fund
The Gieskes-Strijbis Fund is supporting the appointment of a Junior Conservator from 2026 through 2029. Previously, between 2017 and 2022, the fund enabled the Rijksmuseum to support young international scholars in the fields of photography and glass conservation and restoration. Earlier, the fund contributed to the exhibition Late Rembrandt (2015). In preparation for the reopening of the renovated main building in 2013, the fund also made several important conservation projects possible.

Stichting het Gehandicapte Kind
The Dutch Foundation for Disabled Children is supporting the construction of a Changing Places toilet through its Changing Places project (2027/2028), improving the accessibility of the toilet facilities in the Rijksmuseum building.

Stichting Isaac Alfred Ailion Foundation
Provided funding for the Japanese translation of A Narrow Bridge, part of the Country Series.

Stichting Jaap Hartenfonds
The Jaap Harten Fund is making the publication of the book Ed van der Elsken: Up Close (2026) possible.

Jaffé-Pierson Stichting
Provided funding for several acquisitions, including that of the 17th-century Japanese lacquered chest from the collection of Cardinal Mazarin (2013).

Janivo Stichting
Provided funding for Document Nederland Junior (2018 – 2020).

Japan Foundation
In 2022, the Japan Foundation contributed to the exhibition Modern Japanese Lacquer , which explored developments in Japanese lacquer art at the beginning of the 20th century.

K.F. Hein Fonds
Provided funding for various acquisitions including the album of drawings by Van Vianen and Lutma (2017), as well as Ishizaki Yushi’s 1817 portrait of the Cock Blomhoff family (2008).

Koninklijk Oudheidkundig Genootschap
The Koninklijk Oudheidkundig Genootschap (KOG) (Royal Dutch Antiquarian Society) was founded in 1858 with the aim of preserving the Netherlands' cultural heritage. Since then, the society has built a collection of objects relating to Dutch history, art, and the decorative arts. The KOG is a collection partner of the Rijksmuseum and has placed many works on long-term loan with the museum.

Together with the Rijksmuseum, the KOG is working to publish its collections online. Since 2023, the KOG has funded dedicated staff positions to catalogue the works on paper in its collection

Kress Foundation
Provided funding for the Rijksmuseum &RKD Summer School (2017 and 2019) digitisation of the Rijksmuseum’s historical photograph collection (2012). Funded the research conducted by Erma Hermens into technical art history (2016 – 2019).

Stichting Makaria
The Makaria Foundation contributed in 2024 to the publication accompanying the exhibition Looted , part of the collaborative project with the Jewish Cultural Quarter.

M.A.O.C. Gravin van Bylandt Stichting
Provided funding for various projects including the publication Mirror of Reality (2019) by curator Jenny Reynaerts, the KWAB exhibition in 2018, and various acquisitions including that of a group of five Chinese objects from the collection of A.E. van Braam Houckgeest (2003).

Mellon Foundation
Annually facilitates year-long pre/post-doctoral fellowships since 2013, with a focus on cultural diversity in the Netherlands (after 2020). Also supports the multidisciplinary cooperation Netherlands Institute for Conservation, Art and Science (NICAS), of which the Rijksmuseum forms a part.

Stichting Maatschappij tot nut van ’t Algemeen
Provided funding for the restoration of the dolls’ house belonging to Petronella Dunois (2011).

Stichting Michiel de Ruyter
Provided funding for the restoration of Michiel de Ruyter and his Family by Juriaen Jacobsz (2012).

Mondriaan Fonds
The Mondriaan Fund supports the Rijksmuseum through exhibitions, acquisitions, and digital projects. In 2026, the fund is supporting the Voucher Cocreatie Jongvolwassenen project. In 2025, the fund also contributed to the acquisition of Colf on Ice by Hendrick Avercamp.

In addition, the fund contributed to the video artwork Monomania (2025), the exhibition Fiona Tan (2025), and Looted (2024). In 2023, the fund helped make both Infinite Rijksmuseum and the Artist in Residence programme possible. In 2024, it contributed to Collection Online .

The fund also supports long-term initiatives, including Illustrated Travels and the further development of the Atlas of Mutual Heritage .

Previously, the Mondriaan Fund played a role in exhibitions such as Revolusi (2022), Slavery (2021), Look at Me Now (2021), 80 Years of War (2018), and Good Hope. South Africa (2017).

In addition, the fund has made several important acquisitions possible, including the four silver salt cellars by Johannes Lutma (2023), Meissen porcelain (2021), the Calvary sculpture by Claus Sluter (2021), and the estate of Ed van der Elsken (2020).

National Library of the Netherlands and the National Archives of the Netherlands
The National Programme for the Preservation of Paper Heritage, Metamorfoze, is supporting the multidisciplinary research project A Closer Look at Japanese Prints (2025–2027 and 2024). Previously, the National Library of the Netherlands’ Metamorfoze programme supported the preservation and digitisation of autographs in the Rijksmuseum collection (2017), as well as the conservation of a collection of sketchbooks and diaries (2012).

Dutch Research Council (NWO)
Provided funding for various scientific projects including the Science4Arts research programme Climate Effects on Decorated Wooden Panels, and the NICAS.

Stichting Otto B. de Kat
Provided funding for the exhibition Eye-opener. Art Dealership M.L. de Boer (2018).

PACCAR Foundation
Provided funding for the acquisition of equipment for Operation Night Watch and the Atelier Building, the Rijksmuseum’s centre for restoration.

Permanent Representation of the Netherlands to the United Nations
In 2023, the Permanent Representation of the Netherlands to the United Nations contributed to the exhibition Slavery at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Prins Willem de Eerste Herinneringsstichting
Provided funding for the acquisition of the bust of Prince William of Orange by Hendrik de Keyser I (2018).

Pruikenburg Fonds
The Pruikenburg Fund is co-supporting the appointment of an art historical fellow in 2026–2027. In 2025, the fund contributed to the publication Artus Quellinus. Sculptor of Amsterdam . Between 2020 and 2023, the fund made possible the appointment of a curator specialising in 18th-century painting and picture frames. Previously, the fund supported research into 18th-century interior painting and the preservation of the presentation of the Beuning Room by Jurriaan Andriessen.

Stichting RCOAK
The RCOAK Foundation contributed to the Night Watch on Tour project in 2021. In the same year, it also supported the Letters Project.

Rembrandt Association
The association has been supporting major acquisitions and projects at the Rijksmuseum for decades. Recent contributions include the acquisition of Colf on Ice by Hendrick Avercamp (2025) and Look #20 by Iris van Herpen (2025). The Vereniging Rembrandt also supported the acquisition of four 17th-century silver salt cellars by Johannes Lutma (2023). In addition, it played a key role in the acquisition of The Standard Bearer (2022), the core collection of Meissen porcelain (2021), Calvary by Claus Sluter (2021), and the Drawing Out Rembrandt research project. Earlier, the association contributed to the acquisition of the Ed van der Elsken archive (2020).

Royal Society of Asian Art in the Netherlands (KVVAK)
The collection of the Royal Society of Asian Art in the Netherlands (KVVAK) has been on long-term loan to the Rijksmuseum since 1952 and constitutes the largest part of the museum’s Asian art collection.

For 2026–2027, the KVVAK and the Rijksmuseum are jointly funding a fellowship. Earlier, in 2025–2026, they appointed a fellow to research the role of archaeologists in the Dutch East Indies and the development of the KVVAK collection between 1915 and 1940. This research further enhances knowledge of the provenance and significance of the Asian art collection.

To mark its centenary in 2018, the KVVAK contributed to the acquisition of Silver Pheasants beneath Spring Blossoms by Ye Shuangshi.

TEFAF Museum Restoration Fund
In 2012, the TEFAF Museum Restoration Fund contributed to the conservation of ten bronze mourners from the tomb of Isabella of Bourbon.

Terra Foundation for American Art
In 2021 and 2022, the Terra Foundation for American Art made possible two fellowships in the field of American photography. Earlier, in 2014, the Terra Foundation contributed to the realisation of the sculpture exhibition Alexander Calder in the Rijksmuseum Gardens.

The Easton Foundation
Contributed to the exhibition of Louise Bourgeois sculptures in the Rijksmuseum Gardens (2019) and provided funding for the accompanying publication.

Stichting Thurkowfonds
In 2025, Stichting Thurkowfonds supported the educational programme accompanying the exhibition At Home in the 17th Century . Previously, the fund made possible guided tours for people with dementia and visitors with hearing or visual impairments, both for the exhibition Slavery (2021) and for the permanent collection (2020). In addition, the foundation contributed to the publication accompanying the exhibition Creepy Crawlies (2021) and supported Operation Night Watch (2019), the large-scale conservation and research project centred on Rembrandt’s masterpiece. The fund also made possible the development of the multimedia tour on ship models in the Special Collections (2017–2019).

Tiffany & Co. Foundation
Between 2013 and 2022, the Tiffany & Co. Foundation provided multi-year support for the conservation and research of the Rijksmuseum’s jewellery collection.

Turing Foundation
Founding benefactor to the Turing Museumplein Bus (2011 – 2015). Provided funding for the acquisition of by Jan Asselijn (2015) and the exhibition Hercules Segers (2016).

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)
Provided funding for the 2017 Document Nederland photography exhibition, for which Anouk Steketee focused on the theme of statelessness.

VandenEnde Foundation
The foundation supported Rijksmuseum Soundtracks in 2022 and 2023 as part of the broader Music at the Rijksmuseum project, which was launched in 2021. Through this initiative, we developed an engaging public programme that provided a platform within the museum for emerging creators from a wide range of artistic disciplines.

Vfonds
In 2024, Vfonds supported the publication and symposium accompanying Looted , as part of the collaborative project with the Jewish Cultural Quarter. In 2022, the fund contributed to the public programme featuring space for dialogue accompanying the exhibition Revolusi! Indonesia Independent . Vfonds also supported the Night of History, a public evening programme centred on historical themes (2015 and 2016).

VriendenLoterij
The VriendenLoterij has supported the Rijksmuseum since 1998 with an annual contribution towards the acquisition of works of art. In addition, the lottery regularly provides project-based funding for a variety of initiatives, including the multi-year Music at the Rijksmuseum programme.

Together with the Mauritshuis, the Van Gogh Museum and the Kröller-Müller Museum, the Rijksmuseum receives a combined annual contribution of more than €8 million for acquisitions. Thanks to VriendenLoterij participants who choose to support the Rijksmuseum, schoolchildren from across the Netherlands can travel to the museum free of charge by bus. This enables the Rijksmuseum to continue pursuing its ambition of "Every Child to The Night Watch."

Notable acquisitions made possible through the support of the VriendenLoterij include the core collection of works by Erwin Olaf (2018), 17th-century gold ruby glass, Meissen porcelain (2021), and The Standard Bearer (2022). The VriendenLoterij has also supported the large-scale Year of Rembrandt programme (2019), the travelling exhibition The Standard Bearer on Tour (2022–2023), and the blockbuster exhibition Vermeer (2023).

VSBfonds
VSBfonds supports the development of the Impact Monitor (2025–2027), which enables the Rijksmuseum to gain insight into its societal impact in collaboration with Impact Centre Erasmus. The fund also supports the diversity programme Connection through Dialogue (2023–2026). Previously, the fund contributed to the exhibition Good Hope. South Africa and the Netherlands since 1600 (2017) and made possible the acquisition of Dutch Girl at Breakfast by Jean-Étienne Liotard.

The Willem de Kooning Foundation
The Willem de Kooning Foundation is contributing to the exhibition Willem de Kooning at Work (2026).

Stichting Zabawas
Stichting Zabawas supports the Rijksmuseum through exhibitions, education, and conservation projects. In 2025, the foundation is contributing to the educational programme accompanying the exhibition At Home in the 17th Century . Previously, it supported projects including Mission Masterpiece (2023), Operation Night Watch (2019), and the multimedia tours accompanying Frans Post. Animals in Brazil (2017) and Late Rembrandt (2014).

In addition, between 2010 and 2013, Stichting Zabawas contributed to conservation projects in preparation for the reopening of the museum, supported the design of the Teekenschool studios (2011), and made possible the conservation of the Oyster Cabinet (2008). The collaboration began in 2006 with support for the conservation of the former entrance halls.

Please note that the Dutch term Stichting denotes a legal entity that is unique to the Netherlands and is used by many funds and foundations. For the purposes of this English-language alphabetical list, in several cases this term has been placed at the end of the organisation’s name, rather than the start.
