His work reflected this experience for the rest of his life. Visser’s early abstract sculptures prioritised organisation by means of duplication, mirroring and repetition. Following a period of making highly minimalist sculptures, mainly in iron or steel, in the 1960s and 70s he started working with natural materials and found objects. He used them to evoke powerful associations with nature and to embody contradictions such as hardness and softness, transparency and opaqueness, and flexibility and rigidity. As well as sculptures, Visser made furniture, jewellery, collages, drawings and graphics.
