Gerrit Berckheyde

There, the duo worked in various cities before ultimately making their way to Heidelberg, where they worked for Charles I Louis, Elector Palatine. Upon his return to Haarlem in 1660, ​​​​Berckheyde joined the Guild of St Luke. From then on he almost exclusively painted cityscapes of Amsterdam, The Hague and his home city of Haarlem. While these works were accurate and realistic, the painter also managed to infuse them with a vibrant charm. Berckheyde’s life ended tragically in 1698, when he drowned in the Brouwersvaart canal in Haarlem. To this day, his work provides an accurate reflection of city life in the 17th century.
