Nelly Bodenheim

These women, collectively known as the Amsterdamse Joffers (Amsterdam Misses), socialised together and jointly exhibited their work. After leaving the academy, Bodenheim perfected her skills as a draughtswoman with the artist Jan Veth and also became an excellent paper-cutting artist. She became most popular for her own print books and her illustrations for children’s books, written by others. Her silhouette drawings of familiar bourgeois scenes were enjoyed by people of all ages. In 1913, Bodenheim was a member of the selection and organising committee for the exhibition De Vrouw 1813-1913. That year she shifted her creative focus to artistic needlecraft, while also designing theatre posters, theatre costumes and stage sets.
