Most of them are Dutch. They were made in the 20th century by goldsmiths, silversmiths, visual artists and students at various training schools and academies. Marjan Unger was interested in the social, historical, artistic and personal stories told by jewellery, and it made no difference to her whether the objects were made of gold or plastic. The resulting collection is therefore very wide-ranging. It served as the basis for Unger’s academic research: she studied jewellery for many years and in 2010 published a paper focusing on the importance of interdisciplinary research to jewellery making.
